Bigfish

Transforming a former warehouse in the heart of Teneriffe, Ferrier & Co created a bright, modern workspace for web & content studio Bigfish.

When Bigfish found their new home, it was love at first sight. Filled with light and packed with potential, the former warehouse was an ideal choice for this eclectic team of designers, developers, producers and creatives.

Our brief was to create a workspace with a palette of natural materials, soft pops of colour and lots of greenery. Additionally, we were keen to respect the history of the space and let its story continue to unfold. This gave rise to a greenhouse-inspired direction – a tranquil, open-plan environment punctuated with plantlife.

The space was designed to maximise the beautiful natural light spilling in from the 14 ft shopfront windows and industrial sawtooth windows above. Roof trusses were left exposed, enhancing a sense of openness and retaining elements of the structure’s industrial character. Likewise, the polished concrete floor was left untouched as a nod to the building’s former life.

While the office’s open plan layout creates a friendly, collaborative environment, features were designed to divide individual and shared spaces. We worked with Fast Eddie’s Fabrication to design an open powder-coated steel bookshelf, creating a sense of privacy for the team. This piece separates individual work areas from an informal gathering and lunch table, handmade from blackbutt timber and finished with matte Osmo oil.

With laminate worktops, chunky cork pin boards and naturally finished plywood, our custom workstations were designed to be spacious, practical and minimal. Each desk includes a bookshelf that cleverly doubles as an impromptu seat for chatting and one-on-one teamwork.

Polycarbonate sheeting was used to diffuse natural light into a private meeting room. The walls of this room were built from scratch and clad with OSB, a product resourcefully made from sawmill waste and finished with a soft white wash. We made a meeting room table from recycled cedar – this was designed in the shape of an oval to facilitate the collaborative culture of the Bigfish team.

We love repurposing old timber, and were excited to craft kitchen cabinets from recycled Douglas Fir that we rescued from the previous Bigfish office space. These were finished with a soft white wash and complemented with Ceasarstone benchtops. Final touches included our powder-coated steel stools, jute rugs in natural fibres and pendant lights with edison bulbs.

Neither we nor Bigfish are strangers to tight deadlines, and the project was turned around in 3 weeks. We’re pleased to say that it hasn’t taken long for the team to settle into the space, and we hope it plays home to countless laughs and lightbulb moments for years to come.
